Some Additional Important Things To Note

There are many situations that might or will occur to you or someone in your family and it’s important to be prepared. Below we’ve listed some instances that aren’t as common as those we’ve addressed before, but still important to take into consideration.

  • Those in active duty in other states or countries temporarily are still permanent Michigan residents and may be covered as a permanent resident on the auto policy.
  • Out of state family members are NOT covered under the new auto policies PIP unless they own a vehicle that is registered and insured in Michigan. A child that lives in Ohio, for example, is not covered under your policy when they are visiting you. Out of state residents may sue an at fault driver to recover expenses if applicable.
  • If you choose to opt out of PIP because of Medicare coverage, that is your right. It is important to note, though, that Medicare will only cover some of the procedures necessary because of an accident. Medicare will not cover attendant care, home and vehicle modifications, or reimbursement of transportation expenses to medical appointments.
  • If a parent is leasing a car and their non-resident child drives it regularly, the non-resident child must get a non-owned auto policy. They will not be covered in the event of an accident. Only resident children and named insured on the policy will be covered.
